Asy Plateau

The Asy Plateau is a vast plain at an altitude of 2,500 meters (8200 ft), encircled by mountain ridges exceeding 3,000 meters (9800 ft). Forests of Tian Shan spruce line the rivers, creating a picturesque landscape. The plateau is rich in history, featuring ancient burial mounds and one of Kazakhstan's largest concentrations of petroglyphs along the Asy River. Once used as a pasture, the plateau is now home to one of Kazakhstan’s renowned mountain observatories.

Taban Karagai Plateau

The Taban Karagai Plateau lies in the southeastern part of the Ile Alatau Mountains, often described as a "paradise beneath the heavens." Its highest point rises to 3,200 meters (10500 ft) above sea level, revealing traces of ancient glaciers that once blanketed the plateau. As the ice melted, it left behind massive boulders and rocky debris. In summer, the plateau is covered by a floral carpet, enchanting even the most seasoned travelers.

Lake Kaindy

Lake Kaindy was formed by a powerful earthquake more than a century ago. The seismic activity triggered a landslide, forming a natural dam that blocked a valley. The water submerged the surrounding trees, resulting in the picturesque underwater forest that graces the lake's depths today. Despite the passage of time, the lake has remarkably preserved its submerged forest. The cold water in Lake Kaindy slows down the decomposition process, preventing the decay of the trees. As a result, the submerged forest remains remarkably well-preserved.

Kensu Gorge

Kensu Gorge lies on the eastern slope of the Kungey Alatau Mountains, starting at 3,300 meters (10800 ft) above sea level and stretching 45 kilometers (28 mi) before merging with the Charyn River. The gorge’s northern slopes are dotted with spruce forests, while the southern slopes are dense with juniper trees. The Kensu River runs through the gorge and is fed by eight moraine lakes formed from melting glaciers. The river and the gorge are rarely visited, offering pristine and untouched natural beauty.

Tekes River

The Tekes River begins at an altitude of 3,535 meters (11600 ft) at the base of Khan Tengri, Kazakhstan's tallest mountain. Its banks and tributaries are adorned with thickets of birch and willow. The fertile soil in the lower valley supports lush pastures and meadows. The entire Tekes Valley is a scenic treasure, with every bend revealing untouched natural beauty and delightful surprises. Despite flowing through one of the most stunning gorges in the Almaty Region, the Tekes River remains relatively unknown and seldom visited by tourists. The river also features a small yet picturesque waterfall.

Lake Tuzkol

Lake Tuzkol is a saline, undrained lake. Its salt concentrations fluctuate throughout the year, at times nearing those of the Dead Sea. Locals believe the lake is nourished by underground mineral springs, and its mud is considered therapeutic. On clear days, the majestic Khan Tengri, a seven-thousander peak, can be seen from the lake. Visit once, and you'll find yourself drawn back to its unique charm again and again.

Temirlik Canyon

Temirlik Canyon is named after the Temirlik River, which flows along its floor, originating in the valleys of the Ketmen Ridge. At the canyon’s shady base grows a rare relic of Earth's flora—the Sogdian ash tree, which survived the Ice Age. These unique groves of Sogdian ash are found only in Kazakhstan and North America. The canyon is also home to the rare black stork and other birds, including nightingales, turtle doves, and cave swallows.

Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon bears a resemblance to the Grand Canyon in the USA, albeit on a smaller scale. The steep canyon slopes reach heights of 150-300 meters (500-1000 ft), and what truly stands out is the remarkable dissection of the terrain – a dense, chaotic network of numerous ravines. Particularly captivating is the Valley of Castles, where the wind and water have sculpted walls resembling castles and towers. This valley showcases nature's unique architectural prowess, crafting magnificent structures over millions of years. Walking amid these towers and columns, you can marvel at the wild imagination of nature for hours.
