Taraz is one of the oldest cities in Kazakhstan, the remains of which are hidden under the buildings of a modern city. Taraz is an ancient and the largest trade and administrative center on the Silk Road route of the VII-VIII centuries, counting more than 2000 years. There are more than 70 monuments of archeology, history, architecture, and monumental art in the city and its surroundings.
One of the largest centers of the Great Silk Road - Ispijab - was located in Middle Ages on the place of Sairam, the modern district of Shymkent. Sairam is also known as the birthplace of the great educator of the XII century - Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. There are also mausoleums of his father and mother: Ibrahim-Ata and Karashash-Ana.
After breakfast in the hotel, you will depart for a sightseeing tour to the city of Otrar, where you will see the mausoleum of Arystan Bab, who was the teacher and spiritual mentor of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, as well as archeological excavations of the ancient settlement of Otrar. Then you will be taken to Turkistan city. There you can see the Azret Sultan historical and architectural complex and the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, the famous Sufi sheikh and philosopher. After the tour, you will return to Shymkent for an overnight in the hotel.
Otrar is the city where Al Farabi, a medieval philosopher and scientist, was born and lived. This center of trade and handicraft was the main point of caravan routes between Eastern Europe and China. At the end of the XIII century, Mongolian troops flattened it to the ground.
Turkistan was founded around 500 AD at the intersection of caravan routes from Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva to Northern Kazakhstan. The city was known as the spiritual and political center of Turkic-speaking people and in the XVI-XVIII centuries was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. The city of Turkistan gained wide world fame due to the preaching activity of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, the famous Sufi sheikh and philosopher.
After breakfast and check-out from the hotel, you will depart to Aksu-Zhabagly (125 km), the oldest reserve of Kazakhstan. There you will visit Aksu Canyon and, if you wish, you can make fascinating trekking (3 km in both directions) to Aksu river at the bottom of the canyon to wash in its clear, cold, wonderfully clear waters of sky blue or emerald color, depending on the season. After the walk, you will be transferred to Tyulkubas station (25 km), where you will take an evening train to Almaty or another city in Kazakhstan.
Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve is located in the spurs of the Western Tien Shan at an altitude of 1000 to 4280 meters above sea level. The main high-altitude belts are represented here: semi-deserts are replaced by dry grass steppes, luxurious areas of dry meadows give way to dense thickets of stale junipers. A motley mosaic of colorful alpine flowers adorns the foot of harsh peaks with dazzling snows and bluish glacier tongues. The reserve is a rich treasury of rare, endangered, and endemic species of animals and plants. There are argali and gambling goats, lynx and snow leopards, stone martens, and ermines. Bearded vultures, griffon vultures, and golden eagles float high up in the sky. On the stone slopes, there are nesting rock partridges and near the eternal snow, one can find snowcocks.
