Upon your morning arrival in Taraz via train, your guide will be there to welcome you at the station. Following these excursions, you will then depart for Shymkent, where you will check into your hotel for an overnight stay.
Taraz is one of Kazakhstan's oldest cities, its ancient ruins concealed beneath the layers of a contemporary metropolis. The city and its environs boast over 70 monuments of archaeology, history, architecture, and art.
Situated along the northern branch of the Silk Road, this location holds historical significance as the site of the Battle of Talas, the first and last military confrontation between Muslim Arab forces and Chinese imperial troops in AD 750-51. Following the victory of the Arabs, the Persian Samanids assumed control over the region. In Taraz, a large church was transformed into a mosque, and the ruler of Taraz embraced Islam. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of the Islamization of Central Asia.
After breakfast at the hotel, your day will commence with a sightseeing tour of the ancient city of Otrar. In the surrounding area, we will explore the mausoleum of Arystan Bab, the teacher and spiritual guide of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi. Subsequently, we will go to Turkistan, where we will visit the Azret Sultan historical and architectural complex, and the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi. Following the tour, we will return to Shymkent for an overnight stay at the hotel.
Otrar is the birthplace and residence of the medieval philosopher and scientist Al Farabi (Alpharabius). In the late 13th century, the city faced complete destruction at the hands of Mongolian troops. Archaeological efforts have uncovered the remains of the citadel, the main gate, and the rabad.
Turkistan was founded around 500 AD at the intersection of caravan routes from Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva to Northern Kazakhstan. The city was known as the spiritual and political hub for Turkic-speaking people. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, it functioned as the capital of the Kazakh Khanate. The city of Turkistan gained wide world fame due to the teachings of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, the famous Sufi philosopher, who was buried here in a small mausoleum in 1166. The present mausoleum was erected 233 years after his death on orders of Emir Tamerlane. Today, it stands as a revered site for Muslims worldwide.
Following breakfast and hotel check-out, we will embark on a journey to the ancient settlement of Sairam, now part of the city of Shymkent. Our itinerary includes visits to the Local History Museum, Mar-Tobe Hill, Ibrahim Ata Mausoleum, Karashash Ana Mausoleum, and a medieval minaret. Next, we will proceed to the base of Kazygurt Mountain, where you'll explore notable landmarks such as the Adam and Eve Rock, stone animal statues, Noah's Ark (a model of a ship standing on top of the hill), and the Dastarkhan Rock. After the sightseeing adventure, we'll transport you to Shymkent train station, where you can catch an evening train to Almaty or any other city in Kazakhstan.
Kazygurt, standing at 1776 meters (5827 ft), is situated in the northern foothills of the Talas Alatau Mountains. The mountain comprises two hills with a saddle between them. Despite its relatively modest height in comparison to other peaks, there exists a legend asserting that in ancient times, Kazygurt surpassed all mountains in elevation. According to the tale, during the great flood, Kazygurt's summit remained untouched. It is believed to be the location where Noah's Ark docked. Today, atop the mountain, stands a symbolic model of Noah's Ark, crafted from wood and metal.
