Even in the era of modern navigation, no sailor can imagine his life without a lighthouse. Despite the reliability of satellite-based systems, nothing compares to the trustworthiness of these enduring stone towers. Some lighthouses are unique, and one of them is the Melovoi Lighthouse, situated on the rooftop of a residential building in Aktau. This lighthouse, as old as the city itself, has faithfully served for over 50 years. Recognized as the world's first rooftop lighthouse, it stands at a height of 73 meters (240 ft) and has become the subject of numerous urban legends over its existence.
Our next place of interest is the Mangystau Nuclear Power Plant. The access to it is restricted, we will marvel at it from a distance.
The Mangystau Nuclear Power Plant serves as the primary source of heat and electricity for Aktau, neighboring villages, and industrial facilities. Additionally, it supplies drinking water to nearby settlements, as the Mangystau Region lacks natural sources of fresh water. Drawing water from the Caspian Sea, the plant desalinatates it.
The plant cools its reactors with Caspian Sea water, channeling the resulting clean water waste into the man-made Lake Karakol nearby. Presently, the lake is safeguarded by the state, forming part of the Karagiye-Karakol Nature Reserve. Lake Karakol serves as a seasonal habitat for various bird species, including flamingoes, mute swans, whooper swans, Dalmatian pelicans, great white pelicans, and ruddy shelducks, during their biannual migration north or south.
After exploring the plant, you'll encounter various city landmarks, including the MIG-21 aircraft monument, the renowned Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko monument, the Columbus La Santa Maria ship monument, the Eternal Flame, the monument honoring the great Kazakh poet Kashagan, the Kurmangazy Mosque, the Orthodox Church, and numerous other city attractions.
Located on the central square in front of the city administration in Aktau, there stands a distinctive monument—a bronze replica of Christopher Columbus's La Santa Maria ship. Referred to by locals simply as the "ship," this monument has become one of Aktau's symbols. Resembling a ship in every aspect, it features the inscription "Aktau" on its side, complete with anchors and sails. The sails are adorned with depictions of the sun, gulls, stars, comets, and even swans on a slanting sail.
We will conclude the excursion with a stroll along the waterfront and seaside promenade, a photo session amidst the striking white cliffs, followed by a return to your hotel.

The Aktau Embankment underwent renovation a few years ago and has since become a favored destination for both locals and city guests. Set against the backdrop of beautiful white rocks and the azure sea, it offers a tranquil retreat in rocky caves on hot summer days. In the evenings, one can delight in the soothing sounds of the surf, music, and neon lights. The embankment features numerous cafes, restaurants, basketball courts, and playgrounds for children. It's a delightful experience to stroll along the embankment on a warm summer evening. In the winter, swans come to the shore, where you can feed them and capture memorable pictures.
