This reserve boasts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna that captivates and mesmerizes visitors. Notably, Lake Tengiz hosts the world's largest northernmost breeding population of flamingoes. In recognition of its significance, the reserve was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
Korgaljyn Nature Reserve stands as the largest protected area in Kazakhstan, a mere 150 km (93 mi) from the capital, Astana. The Tengiz and Korgaljyn lakes, situated amidst the expansive dry steppe, are remnants of an ancient sea that once occupied this region. Alongside various smaller reservoirs, they constitute a wetland complex teeming with diverse fish and bird species. Despite the passage of time, the reserve has retained its pristine allure. Your introduction to the reserve will start at the Bird Paradise Visit Center, providing you with an opportunity to delve into the wildlife, history, and ethnography of the region. Following an informative tour, you'll watch a 20-minute film titled "Secrets of the Reserve."
The Bird Paradise Visit Center is an ecological and educational hub not only for the locals but also for tourists. It stands as the starting point for any tour of the Korgaljyn Reserve. The center offers guided excursions through thematic halls, providing insights into the history, culture, and nature of the region, along with details about its diverse wildlife. The visit center provides information about the unique, interesting, and renowned aspects of this protected area.
You will further explore the natural beauty of the local region along one of the eco-routes, accompanied by your guide. Transportation will be provided along the route, allowing for several stops to observe the inhabitants of the reserve. The tour concludes with a return to your hotel.
Throughout the tour, you'll have the opportunity to encounter and observe various bird species in their natural habitat, including flamingos, pelicans, swans, sandpipers, herons, seagulls, cormorants, ducks, and more. The pink flamingos, in particular, are a favorite among tourists. From April to September, you can use binoculars to observe them from the coast. Additionally, if you visit at the end of April, the lakeshores will be adorned with a carpet of Schrenk tulips, a rare and endangered species.
