Burabay, also known as Borovoe, is one of the most famous resorts in Kazakhstan. Surrounded by vast steppes, it’s an oasis boasting crystal-clear lakes, pine forests, uniquely shaped rocks, and clean air.
The resort is located within the territory of the Burabay National Park, approximately 260 km (160 mi) from Astana. It is a popular holiday destination for both residents of Kazakhstan and international visitors.
Nature of Burabay
The main feature of Burabay is the striking contrast between the endless steppe and a green oasis of mountains, forests, and lakes. The resort area is home to several picturesque lakes, the most famous of which are Lake Borovoe, Lake Shuchye, Bolshoye Chebachye, and Maloye Chebachye.
In summer, visitors come here to enjoy forest walks, swimming, fishing, and the refreshing air filled with the scent of pine trees. In autumn, the resort becomes especially beautiful, with forests covered in golden colors. Winter transforms Burabay into a peaceful destination for winter activities.
Why Visit Burabay?
The main symbol of the resort is the picturesque Lake Borovoe, surrounded by forests and mountains. Its stunning scenery has made it the most recognizable landmark of the region. Visitors can walk along the shore, take memorable photos, enjoy a boat ride, or simply relax and admire nature.
Rising from the waters of Lake Burabay is the Jumbaktas Rock. Its name translates as “the mystery stone.” Thanks to its unusual shape, the rock has become one of the main symbols of the resort. According to local stories, if you look closely, you can see the face of a young woman from one side and an old woman from the other.
Okzhetpes Rock is another natural attraction of Burabay. Its name translates as “one that cannot be reached by an arrow.” The mountain has a distinctive silhouette and is considered one of the most photogenic places in the resort. Climbing to the top requires mountaineering equipment and professional guidance, so most visitors admire it from a distance.
Burabay is home not only to natural attractions but also to historical sites. One of them is the Glade of Abylai Khan. According to local history, this is where Abylai was chosen as khan. Here, visitors can learn about local legends and experience the historical atmosphere of the region.
One of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of Burabay is the top of Mount Bolektau. Hiking to its summit is a must for many visitors. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for most travelers.
Accommodation
Most tourists stay in the village of Burabay and in guest houses around Lake Burabay. As a result, accommodation and dining prices here are generally higher, especially during the peak season. However, more affordable options are also available.
A quieter alternative is Lake Shuchye, located near the town of Shuchinsk. This area attracts fewer visitors than Burabay and offers a more peaceful atmosphere. There are also several resorts, including the Rixos Borovoe hotel that features CashVille Casino. Guests over the age of 21 can try their luck there. Options include poker, American roulette, blackjack, and other games. The casino also features gaming machines.
