Legends surrounding Okzhetpes Rock

The Kazakh word "okzhetpes" translates to "the arrow will not reach." Folklore offers an intriguing explanation for this distinctive name.

One prevalent legend recounts the tale of a young Kalmyk woman during the 18th century, amid Abylai Khan's rule. As Kalmyk tribes were raiding Kazakh villages, Abylai Khan led his army to fight them off. The battle was victorious for Abylai and he returned with trophies among which was a Kalmyk woman. Presented with the opportunity to choose her husband, she devised a unique challenge. Having climbed Okzhetpes, she affixed a white scarf to a stone, decreeing that whoever could hit it with an arrow would earn her hand. However, every man has failed this challenge. The disappointed girl chose to end her life and jumped off the rock into Lake Borovoe.

Another legend unfolds the story of a boy who grew extremely fast and even owned an elephant as a pet. Soon, the boy's stature became so towering that arrows could not reach his chest. He became a warrior and protected his people from hostile neighboring tribes. One day, during a fierce battle, the hero was surrounded. Not wanting to surrender, he prayed to be transformed into a stone. He then raised his faithful elephant over his head and they both turned into a rock. To this day, the stone atop Okzhetpes bears a striking resemblance to the shape of an elephant.
