Lake Katarkol
Lake Katarkol is located away from other lakes in the Burabay National Park, alongside a village bearing the same name. It’s formerly known as Kotyrkol, which translates to "wormy lake" in Kazakh. But worry not. There are no worms in its waters. However, due to its relatively poor water quality, swimming is not advised.
Lake Katarkol still attracts vacationers, particularly during warmer months. Affordable guesthouses dot the area, offering an array of recreational activities such as swimming pools with slides, children's rope parks, bicycle rentals, horseback riding, and a diverse selection of winter pastimes.
Surrounded by birch and pine forests, Lake Katarkol provides delightful hiking opportunities. On the northern and western sides, dense forests fringe the water's edge. A sandy beach on its eastern and southern shores is ideal for sunbathing. As stated before, swimming is discouraged.
Fishing enthusiasts will find ample enjoyment on the lake, with catches including roach, silver carp, carp, bream, and perch.
How to get there?
Traveling by car is the most convenient means to reach Lake Katarkol. It is positioned 20 km (12 mi) east of the town of Shuchinsk. The distance from the village of Burabay is slightly greater. However, signage along the route aids in directing travelers to the lake's location.
