Lake Azhbay

Lake Azhbay, alternatively spelled Azhybay, is the biggest body of water within Buiratau National Park. Despite its modest dimensions – stretching just over 1 km (0.6 mi) from south to north – its significance transcends its size.

The lake is nestled within a shallow, drainless depression between the Kalmykozha and Karatau ridges of the Ereymentau Mountain Range. Azhbay also straddles the administrative divide between the Akmola and Karaganda regions.

While lacking the picturesque allure of sandy beaches, it holds an appeal for birdwatching enthusiasts. In the northern section of the reservoir, there is a dedicated facility for amateur ornithologists. It serves as an ideal vantage point for observing aquatic birds.

The lake serves as a nesting ground for various avian species including the whooper swan, Eurasian marsh harrier, demoiselle crane, great crested grebe, and black-necked grebe. Additionally, it hosts a multitude of other bird species such as the greylag goose, lesser white-fronted goose, gray crane, and gray heron. Notably, Azhbay, alongside nearby Lake Bozaigyr and the encompassing Ereymentau Mountains, serve as a key ornithological area of international importance.

While Azhbay permits both recreational and amateur fishing, visitors must obtain prior permission from the Buiratau National Park office. The lake's brackish waters are home to silver crucian carp, vendace, and European carp.
