Lake Small Tengiz
Lake Small Tengiz is linked to Lake Tengiz by a strait. Both lakes derive their names from the Kazakh word "teniz," which translates to "sea." These two bodies of water, along with numerous smaller ones, constitute the Korgaljyn Nature Reserve.
Situated approximately 150 kilometers from Astana, within the Akmola region, Lake Small Tengiz experiences a rather harsh climate. During winter, it becomes encased in ice, while in summer, it partially dries up, giving rise to small islands.
The flora and fauna in the vicinity of this lake closely resemble those of Lake Tengiz. Here, one can encounter a variety of bird species, including geese, ducks, seagulls, Dalmatian pelicans, herons, and eagles. Notably, the pink flamingos are the most sought-after avian residents. They make their arrival to Big and Small Tengiz in late March. The attraction lies in the presence of algae and red crustaceans, which endow their plumage with a distinctive pink hue.
Flamingoes spend six months in this region, using this time to renew their plumage, hatch and nurture their chicks, waiting for them to gain strength. Come October, they embark on their migratory journey to warmer destinations in Iran, Iraq, India, Sri Lanka, and various African countries.
The majority of tourists flock to Lake Small Tengiz to observe these birds in their natural habitat. Ornithologists recommend visiting during spring or autumn. To locate the birds, one can inquire with the reserve's administration or engage the services of our company and book a tour of the Korgaljyn Nature Reserve.
