Lake Tengiz

Lake Tengiz is situated in Central Kazakhstan, approximately 200 km (124 mi) from Astana. Remarkably, the lake harbors no fish due to its high salinity caused by the absence of proper drainage. Lake Tengiz consists of two main bodies of water: Big Tengiz, the largest lake in the area, and Small Tengiz. Both of these lakes are integral parts of the Korgaljyn Nature Reserve.

The name "Tengiz" originates from the Kazakh word "teniz," which translates to "sea." The dimensions of the lake are impressive, with a length of 74 km (46 mi) and a width of 40 km (25 mi).

Lake Tengiz's primary source of water is the melting snow, and it tends to partially dry up during the summer months. Depending on the water level, more than 20 islands can be found within the lake. Many of these islands serve as nesting grounds for pink flamingos, making Lake Tengiz the northernmost habitat for these birds.

Pink beauties

Lake Tengiz is a captivating destination for observing pink flamingos. Scientists believe that these beautiful birds have been present here since the Paleogene era when the entire Tengiz-Korgalzhyn lowland was submerged beneath the ancient Tethys Ocean.

To catch a glimpse of the flamingos, ornithologists recommend visiting during spring or autumn, which corresponds to their migration periods. However, it is advisable to confirm the bird's location with the Korgaljyn Nature Reserve administration before embarking on your trip. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour with our company.

Flamingos nest on Tengiz for nearly six months, from late March to early October. They are attracted to the lake by the presence of algae and red crustaceans, which impart their feathers with a pink hue. On the lake, these birds hatch their chicks and await their offspring's strength to embark on long flights to destinations such as Iran, Iraq, India, Sri Lanka, and various African countries.

Guidelines for Excursions

Flamingos are known for their shyness and caution, making it impossible to approach them closely. The minimum viewing distance allowed is 100 meters (109 yd). Excursions to see the flamingos typically span several hours, and all groups are accompanied by guides. It's essential to note that visiting the nature reserve without a guide is prohibited. Guides equipped with specialized optical instruments will point out convenient bird-watching spots.

Flora and Fauna

Flamingos are only one of many species you’ll spot on Lake Tengiz. It’s home to a diverse array of wildlife, including gulls, waders, geese, ducks, terns, herons, and Dalmatian pelicans. In total, the lake supports 350 bird species. During molting, nesting, and spring-autumn migrations, the bird population exceeds a staggering 5 million individuals. The lake’s surroundings also house 45 species of mammals such as wolves and saigas, as well as over 300 plant species.

How to get there?

To reach Lake Tengiz by car, depart from Astana heading southwest along the Korgaljyn highway, and the journey will typically span a couple of hours.
