Lake Zerenda

Lake Zerenda and its surroundings are one of the best holiday destinations in Central Kazakhstan. It offers a peaceful alternative to the more crowded Burabay resort area. With fewer tourists and lower prices, it's an ideal spot for a quiet retreat into nature.

At the lake, you can swim, sunbathe, or try your hand at fishing. Species like ruffe, perch, chub, and vendace are found here. The reservoir stretches over 5 km (3 mi), with a maximum depth of about 7 meters (23 ft). The water is fresh and clear, warming up to 25°C (77°F) in summer. The sandy bottom is mostly flat, and some parts of the shoreline are lined with soft sand.

Relatively low Zerenda Mountains frame the lake, and the village of Zerenda lies right on the shore. Around the lake, you'll find children's summer camps and various recreational facilities.

The name “Zerenda” comes from the Kazakh word zeren meaning a round wooden bowl traditionally used for serving broth or dairy products.

How to get there?

Lake Zerenda is located about 315 km (196 mi) northwest of Astana and roughly 50 km (31 mi) from Kokshetau by road.

If you're traveling from Astana by car, take the Astana-Kokshetau highway. Alternatively, you can take a train to Kokshetau and then a taxi to Zerenda. The ride takes around an hour.
