Zerenda Mountains

The Zerenda Mountains may not be towering giants. In fact, many might call them just hills but if you find yourself in the village of Zerenda, climbing one of these peaks is a must. The views from the top offer a stunning glimpse into the rich and varied nature of the region.

Located around 320 km (200 mi) northwest of Astana, the mountain range stretches about 28 km (17 mi) from west to east. Its highest point is Bear Hill, which rises to approximately 680 meters (2,230 ft). On the way up, keep an eye out for a curious rock formation known as the Giant Mushroom, named for its distinctive shape.

At the foot of the mountains lies Lake Zerenda and the village that shares its name. This peaceful spot attracts visitors with its scenic landscapes, forested hills, and crystal-clear lakes.

One of the most popular destinations in the area is Smolnaya Hill, which stands at 420 meters (1,380 ft). It’s known for its panoramic views and relatively easy ascent. The hike begins at the visitor center of the Zerenda branch of Kokshetau National Park. From there, a 1.5 km (just under 1 mi) forest path leads to the top, winding through groves of pine, birch, and aspen trees. The trail is manageable for most hikers. Just make sure to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. The best time to climb is between late spring and October, when the landscape is at its most vibrant.

How to Get There?

From Astana, the drive to Zerenda takes about 4-5 hours (320 km / 200 mi) via the Astana–Kokshetau highway. Alternatively, you can take a train to Kokshetau, then continue to Zerenda by bus or taxi – it's another 50 km (31 mi) from there.
