Asy Plateau

The Asy Plateau, stretching 40 km (25 mi) in length, is situated at elevations ranging from 2200 to 2500 meters (7200-8200 ft). It is part of the Ile-Alatau National Park and features a vast plain on its eastern border next to the Bartogay Reservoir, while its western boundary adjoins the Turgen Gorge. In the south, the plateau is bounded by the Sarytau Ridge, and in the north, it is surrounded by the Bokaidyntau Mountain and the Karach Ridge.

The Asy Plateau was once a bustling hub for merchants traveling from different parts of Eurasia. Today, it is a lush and tranquil landscape, characterized by a rolling green carpet that stretches from rolling hills to towering mountains. Horse herds can often be spotted grazing leisurely in the meadows, as the plateau serves as a summer pasture (jailau). The winding Asy River flows through the plateau, offering visitors a chance to pause and set up camp on its banks, where they can witness breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. Along the river, one can also discover ancient mounds and petroglyphs, dating back to the Early Iron Age.

The Asy Plateau is also home to the Asy-Turgen Astronomical Observatory, which boasts one of the largest telescopes in the world. It has earned the nickname Chupa-Chups among the locals due to its resemblance to the popular sweet. On the eastern side of the plateau, near the Bartogay Reservoir, there is a campsite available for visitors.

Visiting the Asy Plateau is a rejuvenating experience, as one feels a deep connection with nature. It is important to come prepared with adequate supplies of food, drink, and water, as well as appropriate clothing for the season. To maintain the pristine beauty of the plateau, it is crucial to dispose of waste properly and avoid lighting fires in undesignated areas. Keep in mind that the plateau is part of a protected national park, and an eco-fee must be paid to enter.
