Asy-Turgen Observatory

The Asy-Turgen Observatory, situated on the Asy Plateau amidst the stunning mountains of the Ile Alatau, is a hub of astronomical research at an altitude of 2750 m (9000 ft) above sea level. Its AZT-20 telescope, the largest in Kazakhstan, is the highlight of the observatory. The facility also houses other telescopes for carrying out advanced astrophysical research.

The primary objective of the Asy-Turgen Observatory is to observe and study astrophysical phenomena. This area is considered one of the most suitable for conducting such research as it possesses the necessary criteria of low turbulence of air masses, absence of light pollution, and high air transparency. Regular observations have been taking place here since 1981.

The observatory initially had one pavilion, which accommodated a Carl Zeiss 1000 one-meter telescope. A second pavilion was later constructed nearby to house the more powerful AZT-20 telescope, which has a mirror diameter of 1.5 meters (59 in). The new pavilion was designed to resemble the edelweiss, a mountain flower. However, it is commonly referred to as «Chupa-Chups» due to its resemblance to the popular candy.

The Asy-Turgen Observatory’s white-gray pavilions are visible from afar and visitors to the plateau won’t miss it. However, tourists are cautioned by the observatory staff to avoid using flashlights or car headlights as it could damage ongoing research activities.

How to get there?

The road to the Asy Plateau from Almaty takes approximately 3 hours (117 km or 73 mi). To reach the observatory, take the Kuljinsky tract. Along the way, you'll pass through villages such as Panfilovo, Enbekshi, and Avat before reaching the village of Parushino. From there, take a right turn towards the town of Esik.

As you continue on your journey, you'll leave the Turgen village on your left and pass by various recreation centers and checkpoints of the Ile-Alatau National Park. The road winds along the Turgen River (a great option for rafting, by the way). As you travel through the Turgen Gorge, surrounded by magnificent mountains, you'll finally reach the Asy Plateau, where the observatory is located.
