Bayankol Gorge
The Bayankol Gorge, alternatively spelled as Baiynkol Gorge, forms a segment of the Central Tien Shan range, encompassing the Bayankol River, numerous glaciers, moraine lakes, and a picturesque valley. This hidden gem resides within the Almaty Region, an area of remarkable beauty that remains relatively unexplored by mainstream tourists.
To explore the gorge, it's best to have an off-road vehicle because of its rugged mountainous terrain. The journey entails crossing the river at certain points. Yet, the allure of this location is bound to leave an indelible imprint: ancient fir trees that have witnessed centuries, expansive meadows hosting grazing horses, a meandering river, and snow-crowned peaks that dominate the horizon. Bayankol is not crowded with tourists and its charm lies in its unspoiled state. Although seasoned climbers have already recognized its potential as a launchpad for conquering nearby summits.
Wildlife thrives in the vicinity, including bears, wolves, tau-teke (mountain goats), deer, roe deer, and Siberian mountain ibex. Amidst the flora, spruces stand tall, accompanied by caragana and an array of wildflowers.
Travelers may come across a shepherd's hut, offering the opportunity to purchase traditional dairy products like koumiss, kurt, and kaymak. However, it's advisable to carry ample provisions of sustenance and water. Dressing appropriately for the season, and even a bit warmer, is wise, as even during autumn and spring, there might be snow in the gorge.
