Medvejiy Waterfall

The Medvejiy Waterfall, situated in the Turgen Gorge of the Almaty Region, is a stunning natural wonder that stands approximately 30 meters tall. The name «Medvejiy» is derived from the Russian word that translates to «belonging to a bear». This name is attributed to the belief that brown bears once roamed this area.

Located within the Ile-Alatau National Park, the Medvejiy waterfall is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The journey to the waterfall is relatively easy, with a well-maintained trail that spans just one kilometer, complete with sturdy bridges that cross over the river and clear signs. Additionally, an asphalt road leads directly to the gorge. Visitors can take advantage of benches and tables situated throughout the area for relaxation or a quick bite to eat. However, it is crucial to maintain the pristine beauty of the Ile Alatau Mountains by taking care not to leave any waste behind.

How to get there?

To get to the Turgen Gorge from Almaty, you can take either the Kuljinsky or Talgar tract and head towards the town of Esik. Once you pass Esik, keep an eye out for a fork in the road near the village of Turgen and take the right turn to enter the Turgen Gorge. The entire journey takes approximately 2 hours to cover a distance of around 83 kilometers.
