Bestobe Reservoir

Nestled at an altitude of 1712 m (5617 ft) above sea level, the Bestobe Reservoir sits among the sunny slopes of the Kungey Alatau and Kulyktau Mountains, not far from the border with Kyrgyzstan. The lake is surrounded by stunningly beautiful hills that resemble the layers of a cake, and many visitors note the area's similarity to the landscapes of Iceland. The undulating hills, sparkling gray-blue water, and sharp mountain peaks transport visitors to another world.

The reservoir was created as a result of the construction of the Moinak HPP on the Kegen River, and it's a relatively new addition to the region, having appeared only in 2011. Despite the construction of the Moinak hydroelectric power station beginning in 1985, it was suspended until 2005.

Бестюбинское водохранилище

The Bestobe Reservoir is an ideal destination for those who want to escape the crowds and spend some quality time alone with nature. While there are no sandy or pebble beaches, infrastructure, or recreation centers, this lack of amenities only adds to the attraction for visitors who seek peace and tranquility. Those who wish to stay overnight in this picturesque place should bring a tent, food, water, and everything they need, as the nearest village of Kensu is 4 km (2.5 mi) away. There is a hunting ground near the village for those interested in this activity.

How to get there?

The distance between Almaty and the reservoir is 258 km (160 mi) along the A-351 highway. The road will take about 3.5 hours.
