Big Almaty Canal

The Big Almaty Canal, known as BAC, is an artificial watercourse that meanders through the Almaty Region and the city of Almaty. With a total length of approximately 168 km (mi), it originates from the Bartogay Reservoir and the Chilik River, traversing several other rivers, including the Issyk, Talgar, Bolshaya Almatinka, and Malaya Almatinka. In Almaty, segments of the canal are concealed within specialized collectors, while in some areas, it remains visible on the surface. The BAC can be observed in various neighborhoods such as Baum Grove, Aisha-Bibi, Ozhet, Shanyrak, Dorozhnik, and Kulager microdistricts. Notably, in Almaty, certain exposed sections of the canal are complemented with beaches and parks, providing opportunities for relaxation for both residents and visitors. Additionally, in close proximity to the BAC, you can find the Boraldai Burial Mounds.

The BAC is named in honor of Dinmukhamed Kunayev, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR, who played a pivotal role in overseeing the canal's construction and contributed significantly to Kazakhstan's development during the Soviet era. The necessity for constructing this canal arose from the expansion of Almaty and its adjacent regions, demanding a substantial increase in water resources for irrigation and industrial purposes. The Big Almaty Canal is one of the final grand-scale projects undertaken in the country before the dissolution of the USSR.
