Charyn National Park
Charyn National Park was founded in Almaty Region in 2004. Within the park's boundaries, you can explore:
- The Ash Grove, a relic of the Paleogene period dating back 66 million years.
- The renowned Charyn Canyon, known for its captivating Valley of Castles.
- Bestamak Canyon.
- Temirlik Canyon.
- The eastern section of the Small Boguty Mountains (Bugutty), home to a vulnerable population of goitered gazelles, with strict protections against hunting.
The park boasts a rich and varied fauna, including creatures such as the beech marten, the Central Asian river otter, the manul, and the marbled polecat. Additionally, you'll have the chance to spot Siberian mountain goats, saker falcons, Himalayan vultures, ermines, corsac foxes, golden eagles, Barbary falcons, short-toed serpent eagles, eastern racers, and more. The park's flora is equally impressive, featuring species like the Asian poplar, Ural licorice, Ili honeysuckle, Ili barberry, and Albert's rosehip.
For a breathtaking view of Charyn Canyon, visit the park's observation points, especially during sunrise or sunset when the panorama reveals its awe-inspiring beauty. No words can truly capture the magnificence of this sight.
Charyn Park is not just a haven for nature enthusiasts but also holds historical significance with its ancient burial mounds. Scientists believe that 25 million years ago, these lands were submerged beneath the sea, and the canyon formed its seabed.
When embarking on a journey to the park, ensure you are well-prepared with provisions, water, and appropriate clothing for the season. Camping facilities are available. Summers can be hot and dry, given the park's location in the desert-steppe zone, while chilly winds prevail during the autumn-winter period. Additionally, remember to pay the environmental fee upon entering the protected zone. The ticket office is located on the road to Charyn Canyon, approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) from the parking area. From the parking lot, it's just a 15-minute walk to reach observation deck number 1. We offer several tours of Charyn Canyon, an experience that once witnessed, will forever remain etched in your memory.
