Ili River
The Ili River holds a prominent position among the notable rivers in Kazakhstan. Originating from the majestic Tien Shan Mountains, it is formed by the convergence of two rivers, namely Tekes and Kunges. Stretching over a length of 1439 km (894 mi), the majority of the river flows through Kazakh territory, while a smaller portion traverses China. The grandeur of the Ili River can be witnessed in its significant contribution to the sustenance of renowned lakes such as Balkhash and Kapchagai.
The river is enriched by the presence of over 15 sizeable tributaries. Notably, while the Ili River offers an ideal rafting experience for beginners, seasoned professionals often gravitate towards the Charyn River, which happens to be a tributary of the Ili. The main river, in contrast to its tributaries, tends to possess a more tranquil character, attracting those seeking a calmer journey.
Throughout history, the Ili River has served as a vital hub for trade and culture. It witnessed the passage of caravans along the Silk Road, hosted battles between ancient tribes, and saw the rise and fall of cities.
The ecological landscape surrounding the Ili River boasts a remarkable array of flora and fauna. Its waters are teeming with diverse species, including catfish, asps, pike perches, snakeheads, carps, mussels, shrimps, and crayfish. On its shores, one can observe reed cats, black kites, white-headed cranes, swallows, gulls, hares, and many other fascinating creatures. The abundant biodiversity adds to the allure of the river, making it an enchanting destination for nature enthusiasts.
The Ili River and its surroundings are home to some attractions:
- Derevyannoye Lake
- Altyn-Emel National Park (Aktau and Katutau Mountains, the Singing Dune, Oshaktas Stelae, burial mounds of Besshatyr, etc.)
- Ayak-Kalkan (a well with hot radon water)
- The City of Nomads
- Tamgaly-Tas Petroglyph Site
In addition, there are many hunting and fishing farms along the river. The largest settlement is the town of Konayev which serves as a prime destination for indulging in both gambling and beach getaways.
How to get there?
Accessing the Ili River is generally convenient due to the presence of several roads that run alongside its course, namely A-355, KV-16, and R-21. However, it is worth noting that certain sections of the river may pose challenges in terms of accessibility. In such instances, it is advisable to opt for an SUV as the vast steppes surrounding the river are not the most conducive terrain for regular cars.
