Bestamak Canyon
Bestamak Canyon is situated within the breathtaking Charyn National Park, nestled between the Valley of Castles and the Temirlik River. Often referred to as the Small Canyon, it graces an elevation of 943 meters (3094 ft) above sea level and spans approximately 8 kilometers (5 mi).
The awe-inspiring shapes of Bestamak Canyon have been meticulously sculpted by a trio of extraordinary artists: water, time, and wind. Composed of vivid red-orange and pink rocks, the canyon exudes a fantastical ambiance. It is often described as a miniature version of the Charyn Canyon. The name «Bestamak» translates from Kazakh as «five isthmuses», which reflects the presence of narrow passages found throughout the canyon. During rainy seasons, a river meanders along the canyon floor, eventually joining the Charyn River, while it dries up during the arid periods.
Bestamak Canyon serves as a treasure trove of ancient fossils and remnants of bygone flora. Visitors often stumble upon traces of extinct animals and prehistoric plant species.
How to get there?
To embark on a journey to Bestamak Canyon from Almaty, travelers can follow the A-351 highway. It's important to note that a portion of the path involves traversing a dirt road, making it advisable to opt for an off-road vehicle. Fortunately, navigating to Bestamak is straightforward as clear signage within the Charyn National Park guides visitors along the way.
