Temirlik Canyon
Most visitors to Charyn Canyon confine their exploration to the Valley of Castles, its most picturesque section. However, Charyn Canyon is an intricate network of gorges carved by the tributaries of the Charyn River. One of these branches is Temirlik Canyon, formed by the river of the same name.
Temirlik Canyon is characterized by steep reddish cliffs and a floor adorned with relict ash trees. Unlike the bustling Valley of Castles, Temirlik sees fewer tourists, allowing you to sit quietly in the shade of the trees, listening to the nightingales and the gentle murmur of the river.
A notable attraction in the canyon is Swallow Cave, named for the swallows that inhabit it. At the entrance to the cave, you can capture unique photos.
Some scientists believe that ancient people mined iron ore in the canyon. The red color of the rocks, due to iron compounds in the soil, inspired the name "Temirlik," as "temir" means "iron" in Kazakh.
Temirlik Canyon is part of the Charyn National Park and enjoys state protection.
How to get there?
Begin your journey by heading east out of Almaty along the Kuljinsky Tract. Shortly after passing through the village of Shelek, you'll come to a fork: take the right turn towards Narynkol. This road will guide you to Charyn Canyon. Then, proceed towards the village of Aksai. A few kilometers beyond Aksai, you'll encounter another fork (left towards Chunja, right towards Kegen). Turn left onto the dirt road leading to the canyon's bottom. Be aware that this road may be impassable for regular passenger cars. If you're in a standard car, turn right before the bridge over the Temirlik River; this route offers a more manageable descent to the canyon floor.
The distance from Almaty to Temirlik Canyon ranges from 220 to 300 kilometers, with an estimated travel time of 4 to 6 hours.
