Kaskelen Gorge
The Kaskelen Gorge, situated in the Ile Alatau Mountains within the Ile-Alatau National Park, is a captivating and popular destination. While nearby villagers often visit for relaxation and picnics, it also attracts numerous residents of Almaty as well as tourists. Exploring the stunning slopes of the mountains and appreciating the local landscapes offer a delightful experience, accompanied by the refreshing mountain air.
Beyond its scenic charm, the gorge is notable for its wapiti farms and Scythian saunas. However, it's important to note that the Scythian sauna does not offer the luxurious amenities found in upscale complexes. Instead, it adopts a simple and somewhat primitive approach, featuring a tent pitched over beams, benches with couches, and a stove with stones inside. Interestingly, to generate steam, river water infused with herbs is poured onto the hot stones. Visitors only need to bring a few personal items as the attendant takes care of the rest. It is worth mentioning that even some foreign high-ranking officials have experienced the steam sauna here. To make a reservation, contact +7 705 555 27 81 (WhatsApp).
The Alatau Marals farm serves as another attraction within the gorge. It breeds marals or Altai wapitis. These majestic creatures have found a new home in the Ile Alatau, despite their natural preference for the Altai Mountains due to varying climates and food sources. One of the notable offerings at the Alatau Marals farm is pantotherapy, also referred to as pantocrine therapy. This therapeutic practice involves utilizing the velvet antlers of young male wapitis to address various ailments. It is worth mentioning that while the farm provides this unique treatment, it may not provide the same level of comfort and diverse treatment options as the maral farms and pantotherapy resorts found in the East Kazakhstan region.
A visit to the Kaskelen Gorge would be incomplete without exploring Uy-Tas, an immense gray boulder 5 meters (16.4 ft) in height, 6 meters (20 ft) in diameter, and weighing 500 tons. Experts assert that this is the largest stone in the Tien Shan mountains, remarkably round and devoid of cracks. Notably, Ui-Tas stands alone without any other stones nearby, giving rise to the notion of its cosmic origin. However, the truth is far more mundane – it fell from a great height.
