Lake Kaindy
Lake Kaindy is an amazing natural wonder located in the heart of the Tian Shan Mountains in Kazakhstan. This glacial lake is known for its unique features, including its turquoise blue waters and the submerged spruce trees that tower above the surface.
When disaster creates beauty
Lake Kaindy was formed as a result of a powerful earthquake that occurred in the region over a century ago. The earthquake caused a massive landslide, which created a natural dam and blocked a valley. The landslide also caused the trees in the area to become submerged in the newly formed lake, creating the unique and picturesque underwater forest that is visible today. Over the years, the lake has continued to evolve. However, its submerged forest remained largely intact. It is so well preserved because the cold, oxygen-rich water of the lake slows down the decomposition process, preventing the trees from decaying too quickly. Additionally, the unique conditions in Lake Kaindy provide an environment that is not conducive to the growth of most bacteria and fungi, which are typically the main causes of wood decay.
Scuba diving in the forest
Many people have strolled through a forest, but how many can say they've «strolled» through an underwater forest? The unique experience of exploring the preserved trees in Lake Kaindy is one not many can boast about. If you are an experienced diver and you have the appropriate dive permits, be welcome to explore the amazing underwater world of Kaindy. The trees, now covered in moss and other aquatic plants, create an ethereal and surreal environment that has attracted many visitors to the area. All divers also note the amazing transparency of the water. On especially good days, you can even see the bottom of the lake from its surface.
If we've motivated you and you're already packing your bags, don't forget your wetsuit. Without it, you are unlikely to last even a couple of minutes, because the water rarely warms up above 6 oC (43 oF) even in summer. Divers must be equipped with all the necessary gear, including wetsuits, fins, masks, and regulators, to ensure a safe and comfortable dive. It is also important to note that the lake is located at a high altitude, and divers should acclimate themselves to the thinner air before attempting to dive.
When is the best time to visit?
Lake Kaindy is a breathtaking destination that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. However, the best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the lake is at its most inviting. During this time, guesthouses located in the surrounding birch groves offer convenient overnight accommodations, and breathtaking views of the lake and its surroundings can be enjoyed from their hillside locations.
For those who are not afraid of the cold, a winter visit to Lake Kaindy can be a truly magical experience. The lake takes on an enchanting and fabulous quality, covered in a blanket of snow-white crispness. It's truly worth experiencing the winter beauty of the lake and its surroundings.
