Monk’s Gorge (Monakhovo Gorge)

Monakhovo Gorge, which translates from Russian as Monk’s Gorge, is nestled within the Ile Alatau Mountains and falls within the boundaries of the Almaty State Reserve. The steep cliffs lining the gorge, adorned with Tien Shan spruce trees, give it the appearance of a verdant canyon.

The gorge derives its name from the hermit monks who once sought solace in its caves. After the 1917 revolution, monks from the city of Verny (now Almaty) retreated to these mountains to flee the Soviet anti-religious campaign. They established a place for prayer and even erected a church. Unfortunately, their seclusion was short-lived, as Bolsheviks discovered their presence and executed them. The church was subsequently demolished, and the caves were destroyed. Travelers can still discern remnants of these caves along their journey. Additionally, an old wooden cross stands in memory of these ascetics. It remains unclear whether this cross dates back to the time of the monks or was erected in remembrance of the martyrs who met their tragic fate.

Despite its relatively small size, spanning about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) in length, the path through the gorge is considered challenging due to its numerous stones, sheer rock walls, and fallen trees. The Monashka River meanders through the gorge, renowned for its healing properties, with many collecting its water in bottles or sipping it directly from the source. To reach the monks' caves, one must traverse the Monashka River multiple times.

It has become customary among tourists to tie a piece of their clothing to the branch of a dead tree, while offering a prayer as they do so, in the hope that their desires will be fulfilled. The veracity of this tradition remains uncertain. Nonetheless, it is essential to remember that leaving traces of one's presence in nature is inadvisable, even in pursuit of wishes coming true.

How to get there?

Monk's Gorge is situated near the town of Talgar, and reaching it by car is a convenient option. If you're starting your journey from Almaty, the drive typically takes around an hour, covering approximately 43 kilometers (27 mi). Begin by following Ryskulov Avenue, then make a right turn onto Kuljinsky Tract. Afterward, at the 22nd kilometer marker, make another right turn and proceed along the Talgar Tract, which will lead you to your destination. Along the way, you'll pass by the AltynTau Trout Farm and the Talgar mudflow protection dam.
