Nomad Ethnocenter

A Journey to the World of Nomads

Are you interested in learning how to cook traditional dishes from Kazakh cuisine, creating beautiful crafts from felt, or experiencing the lifestyle of ancient nomadic warriors? Then the Nomad Ethnocenter, situated on the Ushkonyr Plateau in the Almaty region, is the perfect destination for you. There, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich culture of the ancient nomadic peoples of Kazakhstan. The center showcases their fascinating way of life, customs, and unique culture, offering you an unforgettable educational journey spanning several centuries.

Upon arrival, you will be introduced to the yurt, the traditional dwelling of the nomadic people. The yurt is not merely a house but embodies an entire philosophy. In many Turkic languages, the word «yurt» signifies homeland, fatherland, or people. For nomads, the yurt represents a portable mini-homeland that can be transported with them wherever they go. Within the complex, you will find several yurts where a dastarkhan (traditional table) awaits to treat you as an esteemed guest.

Experienced chefs will guide you through master classes, teaching you to cook national dishes such as beshbarmak, kuyrdak, baursaks, kurt, and more. You will not only discover the main courses but also learn to prepare various beverages and the proper processing, preservation, and storage of meat.

Moving on from culinary delights, you will delve into the realm of crafts. The nomadic peoples of Kazakhstan skillfully processed leather, skin, and animal hair to create textiles. Moreover, they crafted various items from wood and bones, excelled in pottery, and were skilled jewelers and blacksmiths (as they often had to defend themselves). You can even try your hand at weaving a carpet adorned with traditional motifs!

Martial arts held a special place in the lives of nomads, who frequently had to defend their lands against enemies. From an early age, they taught their children horseback riding. At the Nomad Ethnocenter, you will have the opportunity to learn horseback riding techniques. However, if you prefer observing rather than riding, you can witness captivating equestrian games and performances.
