Chilik River

The Chilik River (also known as Shelek or Shilik) is a tributary of the Ili River and the largest and most turbid river of the Ile Alatau Mountains. The Bartogay Reservoir was created on the river to support irrigated agriculture. North of Bartogay, the Chilik flows into the Kapchagai Reservoir, a popular destination for beachgoers from Almaty.

The Chilik River features a rapid current making it a favorite among rafting enthusiasts. Its various sections range in difficulty from Class 2 to Class 4. Class 2 sections are suitable for beginner rafters, while only professionals are allowed to navigate the challenging obstacles of Class 4 sections.
