Shynturgen Spruce Forest

Shynturgen spruce forest (also spelled as Chinturgen spruce forest) grows in a region where permafrost lies just 40 cm (16 in) below the surface. In these unique environments, the ice remains frozen year-round, reaching depths of 2-3 meters (6-10 ft). The forest floor is blanketed in a lush layer of moss, creating a picturesque scene. The permafrost hinders the normal development of spruce trees, resulting in crooked trunks.

How to get there?

Shynturgen spruce forest is located in the Turgen Gorge, about 80 km (50 mi) east of Almaty, Kazakhstan. You can reach it via the Kuljinsky tract. On the trail to Kairak Waterfall, you will come across an information board that marks the beginning of the trail to the spruce forest. Be sure to wear closed clothing and comfortable shoes, as fallen trees and dense bushes obstruct the trail.
