Turgen Gorge

The Turgen Gorge stands out as a premier tourist destination within the Almaty Region, owed largely to the breathtaking landscapes of the Ile-Alatau National Park. Stretching for 44 km (27 mi), the gorge culminates at the Asy Plateau. The allure of the Turgen Gorge is further heightened by its collection of waterfalls, including Kairak, Medvezhiy, and Skalisty.

Within the stone-carved valley, the Kairak and Kishi Turgen rivers cascade with an energetic fervor. Notably, the Turgen River has gained acclaim as a prime destination for rafting in Kazakhstan. The area blends alpine and subalpine meadows, mixed and coniferous forests. Remarkably, the Turgen Gorge is home to the remarkable Chinturgen (Shynturgen) moss spruce forests, where spruces grow upon a carpet of moss. Beneath the trees, lie pockets of permafrost.

Given its mountainous terrain, it is advisable to equip oneself with comfortable footwear and provisions when visiting the area. You'll find clean mountain springs for water along the way, so you don't need to carry too much. Appropriate attire in accordance with the ever-changing mountain weather is crucial to ensuring an enjoyable vacation experience. Also, remember that the national park is a protected area, and it has regulations. Prohibitions include improper disposal of waste, starting fires in unauthorized zones, and causing harm to the fragile ecosystem.
