Abay Square

Abay Square in Almaty is situated in front of the Palace of the Republic, adjacent to the Hotel Kazakhstan. It is named after the distinguished poet and writer Abay Kunanbayev, This square, adorned with a monument to Abay, fountains, and lush green spaces, draws crowds throughout the year.

The location is renowned as a venue for public events, ceremonies, and concerts. It also serves as a gathering place where people come together at the monument to Abay to recite his poems, share impressions from their readings, and engage in cultural discussions.

Abay Kunanbayev's contributions to Kazakhstan's culture, literature, and education are immeasurable. Abay, a linguist, composer, and translator, translated numerous foreign and Russian works into Kazakh, including those of Goethe, Byron, Pushkin, Krylov, and Lermontov. He played a crucial role in introducing Russian and European cultures to the Kazakh community. Interestingly, "Abay" was not the poet's given name; it was a nickname. His birth name was Ibrahim, but his grandmother affectionately referred to him as Abay, meaning "attentive" in Kazakh.
