Monument to Abylai Khan
In 2000, a monument dedicated to Abylai Khan was erected in the square in front of the Almaty-2 railway station. The sculpture portrays the renowned Kazakh leader in opulent attire, mounted on a horse. Abylai Khan is depicted holding the horse's bridle with one hand, while in the other, he grasps a symbol of authority – a staff. The monument stands atop a pedestal supported by four columns crafted from a combination of white marble and gray granite. The monument itself is cast in bronze.
Abylai Khan served as the ruler of the Kazakh Khanate. He was elected to this position by the majority of representatives from all three juzes, the divisions based on clans among the Kazakhs. Abylai Khan was renowned for his reputation as a just yet stern leader. His valor knew no bounds, and his sharp intellect and foresight enabled him to maintain not only peace within his khanate but also amicable relations with neighboring states. However, his reign also bore witness to conflicts, including encounters with the Dzungars, during which he was captured, and the Kokands.
He served as khan from 1771 until his passing in 1781. Abylai Khan passed away in 1781 and found his final resting place in the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, located in Turkistan.
