Kazakh National Agrarian University
Kazakh National Agrarian University (KazNAU), established in 1929, is one of Kazakhstan's oldest institutions of higher learning. KazNAU excels in disciplines such as agrobiology, veterinary medicine, information technology, water/land/forestry resources, and others.
What makes this university appealing to tourists? Its main building is a great example of Stalinist architecture adorned with traditional national elements. The building was constructed in the 1930-60s, a period when similar structures appeared all over Soviet republics. The building boasts monumental characteristics, aligning with both Empire and neoclassical styles. Construction began in 1934, reaching completion two decades later, after Stalin's death. The architectural style he inspired lost popularity soon after.
The facade of the Agrarian University's main building showcases quintessential elements of Stalinist architecture, including columns, bas-reliefs featuring the coat of arms, a portico, arched balustrades, and intricate stained glass windows. Despite the challenges that Stalin's rule brought, it also gave us some marvelous architectural masterpieces. For enthusiasts of Stalinist architecture, a visit to this institution is a must.
