Astana Square

Reflecting on History

The historical journey of Astana Square in Almaty extends back to the early 20th century. In 1921, it was called Red Square. Subsequently, its name changed several times over three decades. Up until 1996, it was officially known as Lenin Square, complete with a sculpture honoring the revolutionary leader. This sculpture was later relocated to what is colloquially referred to as the Graveyard of Fallen Monuments. For many years, the locals dubbed the square the Old Square, a name that is still used by many Almaty residents. Following the relocation of the state capital from Almaty to Astana, the square was once again renamed in honor of the new capital.

The Essence of the Square

Astana Square has played host to a rich tapestry of landmarks over the years. First, it was home to the Alekseevsky Military Cathedral, and later the Government House, which now houses the Kazakh-British Technical University. Situated behind KBTU, you'll find the Alley of Outstanding Personalities featuring the busts of V. Kuibyshev, M. Masanchi, A. Zhangeldin, and more. There is also a stone monument commemorating the pioneers of virgin lands in Kazakhstan. In 1997, a monument was unveiled in honor of two remarkable women who were World War II heroes: Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova.

On the Astana Square, splendid fountains, centuries-old oak trees, and vibrant flower beds delight the eye. Both Almaty residents and visitors prefer to spend their leisure time here due to the unique ambiance of the old city. Furthermore, a renovation carried out a few years ago significantly improved pedestrian infrastructure and introduced bicycle paths, enhancing the overall comfort of the square.

Throughout the years, the square has been a venue for diverse events, including concerts, fairs, festivals, and celebrations like Nauryz and New Year festivities.
