Baum Grove
Dedication and commitment
The official founding date of Baum Grove is 1894, making it one of Almaty's oldest parks. Nevertheless, historical records reveal the existence of a grove on this site as early as the mid-19th century. Back then, it remained unnamed and relatively modest in size.
Eduard Baum, a forest scientist, lent his name to the grove due to his pivotal role in its development. Under his guidance, an extensive tree planting initiative took place. Baum handpicked the tree species, including 17 varieties of coniferous trees, 44 species of deciduous trees, and 52 shrubs imported from Russia. Additionally, fruit-bearing trees such as apple and pear adorned the territory, a result of Baum's directive. Elms, ash, birch, and oak trees were thoughtfully arranged along pathways, thanks to his efforts. Over time, the landscape saw the introduction of cherry, acacia, pine, and more.
In 1918, the grove witnessed a gruesome event: the execution of Bishop Pimen of Verny by Red Army soldiers. The bishop, a vocal opponent of Soviet authority in the region, condemned the execution of the royal family. In commemoration of his memory, an obelisk was erected at the site of his death. Moreover, one of the bells of the Ascension Cathedral was named after the martyr bishop.
The grove today
Recently, the grove underwent renovation. During the 2000s, neglect had led to its decline, the grove even got a reputation as a dangerous place. Fortunately, in 2018, the grove was designated a «specially protected area» and underwent restoration. The space was cleared of debris, pathways were revitalized, and informative wooden signs were introduced. Consequently, the lush expanse was returned to its former glory.
Nowadays, the grove is a nice place to visit. Walkways cater to leisurely strolls, jogging, and cycling. There is an area for dog owners to exercise and train their furry companions. They've also set up playgrounds and soccer fields for kids and teens.
The grove calls out to those looking for peace in the arms of nature and an opportunity to recharge amidst the city's hustle and bustle, making it a destination well worth visiting.
