Big Almaty Peak
The Big Almaty Peak, sometimes shortened to BAP, belongs to the northern slopes of the Ile Alatau Mountains. Its pyramid-like shape is visible from the city of Almaty when the weather is clear. The Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory was constructed on the slope of the mountain in 1957. On the south side of the mountain, you will find the Cosmostation and a meteorological post near the Jusaly-Kezen pass. The Big Almaty Lake lies to the east of BAP, while the Alma-Arasan Gorge is situated to the west.
BAP is a popular destination for amateur climbers with a moderate level of difficulty. It is recommended to carry a backpack with food, first aid supplies, and gloves, and to dress appropriately for the weather in comfortable sportswear and shoes with thick soles. The ascent requires climbing stone ledges, which can be sharp, so it's best not to overburden yourself. The climb can be physically demanding and time-consuming, so it's important to travel light.
Reaching the summit of BAP provides a breathtaking view of the Big Almaty Lake, Sovetov Peak, Molodezhny Peak, Tuyuksu Glacier, and the panoramic view of Almaty, provided the weather is clear.
If you are a first-time climber, it's advisable to seek assistance from a professional guide. An experienced guide will show you the most suitable route, highlight the scenic beauty of the area and provide valuable tips on the climb. How to get there?
One of the easiest routes to reach the Big Almaty Peak is via Cosmostation. To get there, you can either drive your car or hire a taxi to the meteorological post. From there, you need to cross the Cosmostation area and start your climb. It's hard to lose your way here, as there is a sign with the name of the peak when you exit the Cosmostation. The peak itself is hard to miss.
Alternatively, if you enjoy long walks and physical exertion, you can take bus #211 to the Alma-Arasan Health Resort and trek along the paths to the BAP, which is approximately 19 km (12 mi). The route passes through scenic fields, rivers, and forests where you can take a break and enjoy the natural surroundings.
