Central Park of Almaty (Gorky Park)
Central Park, also known as Gorky Park, stands as Almaty's premier and most frequented recreational space. This park is perfect for social gatherings with friends, leisurely family strolls, as well as various activities like roller skating, biking, and even catamaran rides. However, it's not merely a lush expanse with amusements and winding pathways; it holds significant sentimental value for many. Recent graduates come here to celebrate the culmination of their school years, newlyweds capture cherished moments through photoshoots, and for most children, Central Park is the first park in their lives.
The park's origins date back to 1856 when Almaty was known as Verny. In 1934, a comprehensive renovation was undertaken, giving rise to leisure areas along the reservoir banks and the introduction of the park's first attractions. The eastern section of the park even housed Verny's first zoo. Since the mid-20th century, the park has been dedicated to Maxim Gorky, the prominent Soviet writer and socialist thinker.
What to enjoy in the park?
At present, the park features a water park, a cycling area, diverse attractions for both adults and children, a lake with rowboats, several cafes, a rope park, and more.
The Eighth Wonder of the World, the water park, stands as one of the park's most popular attractions. During sweltering summer months, nothing compares to a refreshing dip without leaving the city. The water park boasts numerous pools both indoor and outdoor. For thrill-seekers, there are even high-adrenaline slide options. Periodically, the water park hosts foam parties and various competitions.
Central Park places a strong emphasis on its young visitors. For children, there's a Dinopark, a Children's Town, and the Nemo Dolphinarium, which is a hit with adults too. In Dinopark, young history buffs can delve into the world of ancient giants. In the Children's Town, kids can ride a miniature train, go horseback riding, paddle in canoes, and bounce on trampolines. The Nemo Dolphinarium features dolphin and seal shows. After the show, everyone has the opportunity to take photos with these amazing creatures and even swim alongside them. The dolphinarium offers dolphin therapy, a form of treatment for children with developmental delays.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the park offers the Extreme Park and the Panic Room. Other, less intense rides include the Space Station, Chain Carousel, Dancing Cups, Space Gun, Voyager, and more. To see the park from a higher vantage point, consider a ride on the Ferris Wheel. From the comfort of its cozy cabins, you can take in the entire park and even glimpse a portion of Almaty.
After partaking in water activities, rides, and educational exhibits, indulge in a leisurely boat excursion on the park's serene lake. You can rent a boat or catamaran, allowing you to appreciate the tranquil waters and dancing fountain.
The park also boasts several cafes and a VIP restaurant, serving a delectable array of European, Caucasian, and Asian cuisines.
Additionally, the park periodically hosts performances by renowned artists, dance troupes, and vibrant festivals and exhibitions. Local artists frequently set up shop at various sites in the park, crafting personalized portraits for visitors.
Near Central Park, the zoo offers visitors the opportunity to marvel at wildlife and avian species from around the world, including those endemic to Kazakhstan. The zoo also houses a terrarium with reptiles and an aquarium showcasing exotic fish.
