Central Synagogue of Kazakhstan

The first synagogue in Kazakhstan emerged in the late 19th century in Almaty (known as Verny at that time). Its establishment was driven by the local Jews, including soldiers from Nicholas I's army and their descendants. This synagogue was a significant religious landmark in Central Asia, and it started as a simple wooden structure.

However, in the 1950s, during a period marked by rising anti-Semitism, authorities demolished the building. Consequently, for nearly four decades, the Jewish community in Kazakhstan didn’t have a dedicated place for prayer and worship. It wasn't until the era of perestroika in the late 1980s and early 1990s that the establishment of special religious centers was permitted. In 1994, under the leadership of Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen the Jewish community in Almaty began gathering in a private house. Finally, the construction of the Central Synagogue was concluded in 1997, symbolically coinciding with the 53rd anniversary of the passing of Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, a renowned rabbi who fought to preserve Judaism and Jewish traditions during the Soviet era.

Though not architecturally striking, the two-story structure of the Central Synagogue of Kazakhstan holds immense significance for the Jewish community. Constructed from brick, it bears a golden inscription that reads «Jewish Center. House of Menachem. Chabad Lubavitch». Inside, the synagogue boasts a simple yet inviting interior. Within the synagogue's premises, a separate store offers a range of kosher products. Additionally, visitors can peruse numerous books on religious topics. Adorning the synagogue's windows and fence is the Star of David, a six-pointed star symbolizing Judaism. The center's courtyard features a nine-branched candelabra, which is kindled during the sacred Hanukkah holiday.
