Cathedral of Christ the Savior
The history of one of Almaty's most significant Orthodox churches began in 1993 when it was merely a humble chapel. Over time, the number of parishioners increased, prompting plans for the construction of a new, larger temple. The construction of this new church was blessed by His Eminence Alexy, Archbishop of Tula and Belyov.
In 1997, the first floor of the temple was completed. During the same year, the central altar was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity. The iconostasis was adorned by Archpriest G. Sergeyev, with the assistance of his mother and the local artist A. Cherepanov. Two years later, the main golden dome was installed. For over two decades, the church has been offering Sunday school programs, catechism courses, and maintaining a library with an extensive collection of Orthodox spiritual literature.
In 2003, the church saw the addition of a baptismal font. The iconostasis underwent a refreshing update during this period. In 2011, a log chapel dedicated to Saint Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia, was constructed adjacent to the main temple.
Today, the cathedral stands in one of Almaty's most bustling neighborhoods, captivating passersby with its white walls and golden domes. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior welcomes all seeking spiritual solace, offering a place for prayer, communion, confession, and more. The temple houses several precious relics, including ancient icons portraying Mary and Saint Nicholas, as well as the sacred remains of the healer Luke of Simferopol.
