Gorelnik Gorge

Gorelnik Gorge is a stunning location situated in the foothills of the Ile Alatau Mountains, near the Shymbulak Ski Resort. The gorge is surrounded by the Malaya Almatinka River, Kumbel Peak, and Trapezia Pass. It's one of the most popular and easily accessible gorges in the vicinity of Almaty, offering serene landscapes and picturesque nature.

During the warm months, visitors enjoy picnics along the riverbanks, and capture colorful photos against the backdrop of the flowing water and spruce forests while exploring the two waterfalls in the gorge – Big and Small. For those who venture higher towards the Tuyuksu alpine camp, the Black Waterfall is a spectacular sight. Additionally, the Eagle's Nest rocks, situated a few meters from the upper waterfall, are a popular spot in the gorge.

How to get there?

The center of Almaty and Gorelnik Gorge are approximately 30 km (19 mi) apart, with most of the distance accessible by car. From Almaty, head down Kerey-Zhanibek Khandar St and pass the Medeu Skating Rink. Stop a short distance before reaching the Gorelnik thermal spring, about 500 m (547 yd). Once there, take the path on the right which will lead you directly into the gorge.
