Golden Square of Almaty
During the Soviet era, the Golden Square in the heart of Almaty served as the residential enclave for the Soviet elite. Its development unfolded between 1930 and 1970. Exclusive apartments within the Golden Square were allocated to prominent Communist party members, scientists, and cultural figures. The Golden Square is situated between Jeltoksan, Bogenbay Batyr, Kunayev streets, and Abay Avenue.
The Golden Square comprised houses designated for specific professions. Examples include the House of Writers, the House of Artists, and the House of Generals. Housing within the Golden Square could not be purchased; rather, it had to be earned based on one's accomplishments. Notably, the residence of Dinmukhamed Kunayev, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR, stands out, now preserved as a memorial apartment and museum.
Despite the aged infrastructure, lacking elevators, and worn-out utilities characterizing the buildings, the Golden Square continues to command real estate prices above the city average today. The allure of residing in this historic area persists, reflecting the enduring fascination with its Soviet-era legacy.
