Cosmostation (Tien Shan Scientific Station)
Since its establishment in the late 1940s, the Tien Shan high-mountain scientific station, also known as the Cosmostation, has been actively operating at the Jusaly-Kezen Pass near Almaty. Perched at an altitude exceeding 3000 meters (9800 ft), this facility was created with the primary objective of investigating high-energy physics through the study of cosmic radiation. Throughout the Soviet era, the station hosted physicists from various nations. However, following the dissolution of the USSR, the future of the station became uncertain. Fortunately, through successful negotiations between the Kazakh and Russian authorities, this vital scientific institution was preserved.
The Cosmostation encompasses several buildings that house scientific institutions, a seismic station, a laboratory belonging to the Institute of Geography, as well as accommodations for the station's personnel. Renowned for its cutting-edge research, the Cosmostation stands at the forefront of its field, surpassing other nations' similar stations in certain areas of study.
The station is situated along routes leading to numerous mountain peaks, including the Big Almaty Peak. It is also included in the itinerary of our trekking tour to the Big Almaty Peak.
How to get there?
The Cosmostation, situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) from the center of Almaty, is accessible by an asphalt road. However, the road is undergoing construction and is temporarily closed. There are still adventurous tourists who opt to embark on the journey to the station on foot. One can take bus #211 and travel to its last stop and then trek to the station. The distance from the station to the Big Almaty Peak is approximately 2 km (1.2 mi).
