Lermontov Russian Drama Theatre
The Russian Drama Theatre, named in honor of the renowned poet Mikhail Lermontov, stands as one of the oldest theaters in Kazakhstan since its establishment in 1933. Its reputation and acclaim were fostered by a distinguished group of artists who formed the backbone of the theater's ensemble. This esteemed cast included actor Vladimir Zeldin, director Yuriy Rutkovsky, actress Zinaida Morskaya, actor-director Evgeniy Diordiyev, and others.
Throughout its history, the Lermontov Theatre has graced its stage with performances not only from Russian playwrights but also from foreign dramatists. Over the years, audiences have been enthralled by the likes of A. Chekhov's "The Seagull," A. Griboedov's "Woe from Wit," Eduardo de Filippo's "Filumena Marturano," N. Gogol's "Inspector General," N. Richard Nash's "The Rainmaker," K. Paustovsky's "Lieutenant Lermontov," and many others.
Until 1969, the Russian Drama Theatre "shared" a building with the Kazakh Drama Theatre, but later, it found a new home in the Golden Square area of Almaty. Constructed in the classical architectural style typical of the USSR, the theater building possesses a distinctive touch – large stained-glass windows that adorn the entire ground floor.
In 2023, a bronze sculpture by Yuri Pomerantsev was unveiled in front of the Lermontov Theatre. The sculpture commemorates the late Kazakhstani actor, who left a lasting legacy in national cinema and theater.
