Medeu Mudflow Protection Dam
The Medeu mudflow protection dam was constructed during the Soviet era as a protective measure against the frequent mudflows that occur in mountainous regions, safeguarding the city of Almaty. Situated in the eastern part of the Mokhnataya Sopka Mountain, the dam obstructs the Malaya Almatinka River. It is noteworthy that the construction of the dam utilized the pioneering method of blasting, marking the first-ever implementation of this technique worldwide.
Measuring 530 meters (580 yd) in length, the height of the structure was initially 110 meters (361 ft). However, it was later raised following a devastating mudflow disaster in 1973, emphasizing the significance of the dam's role in protection.
The Health Ladder
One prominent feature near the dam is the Health Ladder, an ascent consisting of 842 steps leading to the top. Aptly named, this staircase is believed to contribute to improved health and increased endurance as climbers breathe in the fresh mountain air. The Health Ladder is also favored by professional athletes seeking to set records by repeatedly ascending it. In fact, in 2021, two residents of Almaty climbed the stairs 82 times consecutively! Perhaps you can surpass this record? Visit Medeu and put your strength to the test! Additionally, an annual mass race takes place on the Health Ladder, open to all participants. For those less inclined towards rigorous physical activity, there are resting areas along the stairs. However, if you manage to overcome the hurdle of several hundred steps and reach the top, you will be rewarded with comfortable viewing platforms on the top. From there, you can enjoy an unparalleled vista encompassing the Medeu Skating Rink, the Ile Alatau Mountains, and the city of Almaty.
In 2011, a cable car was constructed over the dam, connecting Medeu to the Shymbulak Ski Resort. Embarking on a ride on this cable car offers a splendid opportunity to marvel at the picturesque tract and the sports complex from an elevated perspective.
Throughout its existence, the dam has successfully withstood numerous mudflows, underscoring its crucial role in safeguarding the city. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive destination for both tourists and locals alike.
How to get there?
You can get to the Medeu dam by a special bus that runs from the Medeu Skating Rink to the Shymbulak Ski Resort. The bus stop you need is called «The Dam».
