Military History Museum
In 1965, the city of Almaty welcomed the opening of the Military History Museum which grants visitors the opportunity to explore a vast collection of Soviet-made military equipment. The museum's exhibition complex is divided into four collections. The first collection showcases an assortment of armored fighting vehicles and equipment, while the second focuses on special equipment. The third collection features an array of firearms and artillery, while the fourth and final collection highlights the air force.
Enthusiasts of military equipment will find delight in the detailed models of aircraft, guns, boats, reconnaissance patrol vehicles, anti-aircraft warfare, and more. The museum also showcases equipment used by various specialized units such as the Navy and Air Force. Visitors can immerse themselves in history through the presentation of historical documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other artifacts.
One of the museum's notable highlights is an exposition dedicated to the renowned 316th Infantry Division, led by Major General I.V. Panfilov. In 1941, the division's 28 soldiers destroyed eighteen German tanks, paying the ultimate sacrifice in the process. The museum houses a diorama portraying the battle for Moscow and showcases relics from the Brest Fortress, the USSR's first frontier stronghold to face a German attack during World War II.
In recognition of the significance of the Afghan war, the Military History Museum features a special hall of fame dedicated to honoring Kazakh soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan.
