Nedelka Fountain
The Nedelka Fountain in Almaty, designed and developed by M.K. Safin in 1972, stands as an iconic and beloved landmark. Situated in a square adjacent to the Abay Opera and Ballet Theater, it holds a prominent position within Almaty's renowned Golden Square.
The fountain not only captivates visitors with its aesthetic appeal but also provides a serene oasis for relaxation. There, people often find respite from the city's hustle and bustle. The name «Nedelka», meaning «a week» in Russian, was chosen to reflect the design of the fountain: seven forged arches representing the days of the week. Each arch is adorned with round lanterns, crafted with openwork patterns.
The composition of the Nedelka Fountain consists of these arches, a rectangular pool divided into sections, and a circular platform featuring cascading water jets. The pool mimics the flow of a mountain river, symbolizing the fleeting and unstoppable nature of time.
Interestingly, the original concept envisioned a fountain with twelve arches, representing the twelve months of the year. However, due to spatial constraints, the design was adapted to incorporate seven arches, resulting in the «Week» fountain we admire today. It has become a tradition among locals to arrange meetings at the fountain based on the day of the week.
