Square on the Former Presidential Residence Site
In the very heart of Almaty, on the site of the former residence of the First President of Kazakhstan, a new public space opened this fall. Once a closed and heavily guarded area, it is now fully open to everyone.
This place carries a difficult memory. In January 2022, the building was at the epicenter of unrest and severely damaged by fire. Rather than restoring it, the authorities decided to demolish the residence. Yet a fragment of the original wall was preserved. Now, it’s a quiet memorial to the tragic days of "Qantar" and to those who lost their lives.
Today, the atmosphere here couldn’t be more different. The square has been transformed into a green space, planted with more than 300 trees and hundreds of shrubs. It also boasts stylish lighting, modern irrigation, and comfortable seating areas. At the center, lies a pond that will turn into an ice rink in winter. Beneath the square, there is an underground parking facility that offers access to the park via stairs or elevator.
How to get there?
The square is located at the intersection of N. Nazarbayev Avenue and Gandhi Street. The nearest bus stops are "Ramstore Mall" (buses #2, 48, 63, 86, and 127) and "Joldasbekov St." (buses #45, 48, and 128).
