Small Almaty Gorge

The Small Almaty Gorge, or Maloalmatinskoye Gorge, derives its name from the Small Almaty River (Malaya Almatinka River) that flows through its expanse. Contrary to its name, the gorge is quite big, hosting notable attractions such as the Medeu Skating Rink, Shymbulak Ski Resort, Gorelnik Hot Spring, Mount Mokhnatka, Mynzhylky Tract, Butakov Waterfalls, and the Tuyuksu Glacier.

For over 70 years, the Medeu Skating Rink has proudly held the title of the world's highest mountain skating rink. The Shymbulak Ski Resort achieved recognition in the Guinness Book of Records for being the world's highest night ski slope. The Mynzhylky Tract features Almaty's oldest mudflow protection dam, while the Butakov Waterfalls are a cherished destination for picturesque hikes. Climbers favor the Tuyuksu Glacier, which also hosts a glaciological station. The Gorelnik Hot Spring offers a rejuvenating experience with its radon water baths.

The gorge, viewed from various angles, presents an awe-inspiring panorama: towering snowy peaks reach for the sky, rivers babble, and cascading waterfalls glisten in the sunlight. Meadows, adorned with herbs and flowers or blanketed in snow, extend as far as the eye can see, complemented by ancient Tien Shan spruces.
