Verny School named after G.A. Kolpakovsky
Almaty boasts a unique monument known as the former Verny School named after G.A. Kolpakovsky. Originally constructed in 1890, this remarkable structure exemplifies the finest traditions of Russian wooden architecture, featuring intricate carved architraves, ornate wooden elements adorned with openwork carvings, and a sloped roof.
Initially serving as the Verny School from 1890 to 1920, the building underwent several transformations in its storied history. It was later repurposed as the city's first Labor School and subsequently converted into an agricultural technical school in the 1930s. Eventually, the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR relocated to this distinguished edifice, and in the 1990s, it became the new home of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Now the building houses the City Renovation Bureau.
The identity of the school's original architect remains a mystery, with debates centered around whether it was Zenkov or Gourdet who designed the building. Both architects were renowned in the city of Verny (the former name of Almaty) and contributed significantly to the architectural landscape of that period. Regardless of the designer's name, the meticulous attention to detail exhibited in the project has ensured the preservation of the building in excellent condition to this day.
Notably, the Verny School has produced a host of esteemed graduates, including M.V. Frunze, a prominent Soviet public and military figure, revolutionary leader U.K. Zhandosov, T. Bokin, a participant in the national liberation uprising of 1916 in Jetysu, and M.T. Tynyshpayev, a renowned travel engineer who later served as the prime minister of the Turkestan autonomy.
Situated within the Almaty historical and architectural reserve, the Verny School forms part of a complex comprising significant historical buildings in the heart of the city.
