Monument to Viktor Tsoi

Victor Tsoi, a Soviet singer and songwriter, was the co-founder of Kino, which is considered one of the most influential bands in Russian music history. In addition to being a popular singer, Victor was also an accomplished actor and played a leading role in the 1988 Kazakh film «The Needle». Two years later Tsoi's life was cut short when he died in a car accident in Latvia.

The site of the film’s final scene along Tulebayev street in Almaty has become one of many memorials for Viktor Tsoi. In 2017, an avenue dedicated to the film was inaugurated, and a statue of Tsoi was unveiled a year later. The statue portrays Tsoi in a relaxed pose, with one hand holding a lighter and the other in his pocket. The pavement of the alleyway where the monument stands is adorned with iron plates bearing lyrics from Kino's most popular songs, such as Gruppa Krovi (Blood Type), Zvezda Po Imeni Solntse (A Star Called Sun), Pachka Sigaret (A Pack of Cigarettes), etc.

Kino's innovative music blended rock, punk, and new wave, while their socially and politically charged lyrics spoke to disillusioned Soviet youth longing for change. To this day, Kino is considered an iconic band and their legacy continues to inspire musicians and fans alike.
